FC Edmonton has a chance to be the first local club to be named Edmonton Cup champion when it takes on Portsmouth FC from England in a friendly soccer match at Commonwealth this evening.

The annual honour was initiated last year in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the Alberta Soccer Association. Argentina’s River Plate beat England’s Everton FC 1-0 in 2009.

Portsmouth is on a pre-season tour of North America, having played in San Diego and held a five-day training camp in California before coming to Edmonton. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. and tickets are available through Ticketmaster.
