Today marks the start of Fire Prevention Week, and this year’s event is geared around making Calgarians understand the importance of having a working smoke detector in their home.

According to the Calgary Fire Department, statistics show fewer deaths or serious injuries occur in households where smoke alarms are installed and maintained.

The Calgary Fire Department will be going around to city homes today to check the condition of existing alarms.
