Now is the time to check out the latest acquisitions at the Canadian Museum of Civilization and get a peek into Canada’s 350-year history of formal education. The museum recently received two centuries’ worth of classroom treasures from the Ottawa Catholic School Board, including 1,800 books and 500 artifacts.
Visitors can browse through workbooks, writing instruments, inkwells, maps, and other items, which represent the teaching methods and classroom etiquette of Canada’s past. The Toles School module depicts a one-room schoolhouse in rural Alberta and describes the history of a group of African-Americans who immigrated to western Canada just before WWI.
