The body of a woman found near a bicycle patch in Ottawa yesterday was nude and “beaten senseless” according to witnesses, and the funeral for Amber Bowerman, the basement tenant who was stabbed to death in Calgary’s recent murder-suicide, was described as a “good-bye party.” Angry GM workers were fearful about the future in the wake of GM’s plans to mothball a truck plant in Oshawa, Ontario. The widow of the latest Canadian soldier to be killed in Afghanistan said her husband was a loyal, brave and dedicated man, who was also her best friend. Paul Bernardo’s jailhouse denial of any involvement in the
disappearance and death of university student Elizabeth Bain, which was described by an Ontario judge as “boring,” will be
released to the media
next week.

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama attempted to mend fences between different Democratic camps, while the new commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan set out to increase border security. A protest over high fuel prices turned violent in Brussels, and the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protest and crackdown passed without commemoration in China where the government is focused on preparing for the Olympic games. After being at the edge of the political stage for 16 years, Vicki Kennedy arrived in the public spotlight as she took a very active role in her husband Ted Kennedy’s fight against brain cancer.

A day after CTV did the same, Canwest (which owns the Global and E! television networks) rolled out their fall lineup, and The Simpsons will continue until at least season 20, becoming tied with Gunsmoke as the longest running show in prime time. The Detroit Red Wings won the Stanley Cup.
