Calgary police say the five killings in a family home may have been carried out by the father,
who was one of the dead. Police have not confirmed this murder-suicide
theory and people who know the man have so far only spoken kindly of
him to media. While Stephen Harper is in Europe to reinforce Canada’s environmental reputation, international newspapers are focusing on Canada’s political controversy. While in Rome, Harper may have seen Maxime Bernier’s picture on the front page of an Italian paper, and Opposition members had a laugh in the House of Commons yesterday reading Italian and British headlines – all regarding Bernier’s love life and misplaced papers – into the parliamentary record. While Harper met with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown in London to discuss Harper’s environmental plan, Liberal Leader Stephane Dion met with former prime minister Tony Blair in Toronto to discuss climate change. Meanwhile, thousands of Canadians held peaceful rallies yesterday to mark the native Day of Action, with about 1,000 people gathering on Parliament Hill. The focus there was on a long-awaited elementary school for the Attawapiskat First Nation in northern Ontario. In Vancouver support groups are angered to hear stories about disabled men being Tasered and the city mourns the loss of a Vancouver Canuck. Defenceman Luc Bourdon died yesterday in a motorcycle crash in New Brunswick.

Myanmar’s ruling junta is blasting international donors for only pledging up to $150 million, saying $11 billion is needed for reconstruction. In Israel there is increasing pressure on Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to resign as a corruption investigation gains momentum. U.S. Democratic candidate Barack Obama is distancing himself from a reverend following a sermon at Obama’s church that mocked Hillary Clinton. In the sermon, Rev. Michael Pfleger said Clinton thought, “I’m white. I’m entitled. There’s a black man stealing my show.” He then parodied Clinton sobbing and wiped his face with a handkerchief. New research is showing Stonehenge may have been used as a burial ground for centuries longer than originally thought, and an Austrian woman who was kidnapped and held captive in a cell for more than eight years before escaping is now the host of a TV show.
