Mint releases 22 million quarters celebrating hockey gold

If you look closely at the skater on the new 25-cent coin issued to celebrate the men’s hockey gold medal at the 2002 Olympics, it looks a lot like Michael Peca, insisted Michael Peca.

The Royal Canadian Mint released 22 million of the coins into circulation yesterday, including three million coloured coins that were to be randomly inserted into new rolls.

Peca, a member of that goal-medal winning team, was at the Jim Durrell Complex to unveil the new coin.

Of all the great Canadian Olympic moments, the men’s hockey gold medal in the 2002 games was voted as the greatest in an online poll hosted by the Royal Canadian Mint. Peca said the new coin helps to put into perspective what the victory meant to the rest of the country.
