MLA’s motion may scrap Grade 3 tests

Local groups support an Alberta MLA’s motion to change or scrap Grade 3 mandatory testing.

President of the Calgary Association of Parents and School Councils Laura Shutiak said her organization supports the motion from former teacher and Bonnyville-Cold Lake MLA Genia Leskiw to scrap the test.

“I think the way the tests are being used to rate teachers and schools are inappropriate. They were not meant to be used that way,” she said. “It’s not a good use of data.”

Shutiak would support either scrapping the tests or moving them to the beginning of the year instead of the end.

“Then the results can be used as a teacher’s tool,” she added.

The motion will be debated next week in the Alberta legislature.
