Molotov cocktail thrown at apartment

An eight-month-old baby, a 20-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man were taken to hospital with smoke inhalation injuries after a Molotov cocktail was reportedly thrown at a fourth-floor apartment door in Ottawa’s Carlington area late Tuesday night.

Neighbours Michael Descarie and Annik Cere-Ozoux returned to their 1494 Lepage Ave.

apartment Tuesday night to find firefighters outside the four-storey building.

“We were told a Molotov cocktail was thrown at a door,” Descarie said yesterday. “We live across the hall.”

Firefighters kicked in their door, and others in the building to make sure everyone had made it out safely.

The fire was called in at 10 p.m. and was under control by 10:20 p.m. In addition to smoke damage, there was a bit of fire damage to the fourth floor.

Ottawa Fire Services spokesman Marc Messier said about 20 people, the occupants of about five apartments, will not be able to return to their homes for several days.

Descarie said the incident makes him feel nervous. “This isn’t the greatest neighbourhood,” he said.

The Ottawa police arson unit is investigating the fire as suspicious.
