Over 130 mission heads, diplomatic staff, and their families joined WaterCan’s honorary president Margaret Trudeau at the second annual Great Canadian Barbecue and Picnic yesterday evening at the Billings Estate National Historic Site.

For the past 15 years, Ottawa’s international missions have raised over $1 million for WaterCan through the charity’s annual gala fundraiser — The Embassy Dinner.

WaterCan executive director Gary Pluim said the barbecue is a way of thanking their international supporters with a real Canadian-style barbecue picnic.

This year WaterCan will be conducting water, sanitation and hygiene education sessions in 59 schools in Eastern Africa.

Last March, WaterCan was awarded $2.11 million over three years from the Canadian International Development Agency for water and sanitation projects in Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania.
