Moosehead Dry heating up ahead of baseball championship

Dartmouth Moosehead Dry is getting hot at just the right time.

The longtime Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League powerhouse has shaken off a quiet start and won five straight games heading into the Canadian senior baseball championship starting Thursday at Beazley Field and Mainland Common.

The streak included huge back-to-back victories over the rival Halifax Pelham Molson Canadians, propelling them into top spot in the final provincial standings.

“You always want to be on a roll heading into a tournament like this,” Dry player-coach Darren Doucette said. “You always want to peak at the right time and we’ve always used the regular season as a two-month-long spring training.”

Dartmouth received a reality check last season when it didn’t advance to the provincial final. Instead of heading into nationals as provincial champions, the Dry is heading in just as host, which Doucette called “embarrassing” last summer.

“It was a bitter way to end last year,” he said. “We’re starting to play the way we’re capable of now and it’s good to see.”
