The Halifax Mooseheads have slipped back to their losing ways.
The Mooseheads endured a tough weekend at the Metro Centre, dropping 4-2 decisions to the Bathurst Titan yesterday and the Quebec Remparts on Saturday as their latest losing streak in a difficult season stretched to five games.
Riding a four-game home winning streak entering the weekend, the Herd couldn’t keep the fire burning. After a valiant effort against one of the QMJHL’s best teams on Saturday, the Mooseheads were underwhelming against the lesser Titan.
“We weren’t really expecting (another losing streak) but I guess we’ve fallen short,” said Mooseheads forward Gerrad Grant, who had two assists yesterday. “We’ve come close … It does suck, but we have to take some positives out of it.”
Power-play tallies from Travis Randell and Pascal Amyot had the Mooseheads down by just a goal heading into the third period for the second straight night. But a costly bench minor for too many men on the ice resulted in Remi Blanchard’s insurance goal on a shot from the faceoff circle at 9:04.
“It was a backbreaker to take a bench minor that late in the game, especially already down by one,” Randell said.
It’s the third-longest losing streak of the season, as the last-place Mooseheads have also endured a franchise-record 12-game run and a season-opening seven-game stretch.
Grant said they “came out flat,” a letdown against Bathurst, which is only four spots ahead in the standings. The Herd slipped to 5-22-2, five points in the QMJHL basement.
“It always seems we put in a great effort against top teams but when we’re playing teams we can catch in the standings, we bring our game down a level,” Randell said.
Mathieu Corbeil started both games in the Mooseheads’ goal, and was solid in stopping 59 of 67 shots. Carl Gelinas and Jessyko Bernard were the marksmen on Saturday.
The Mooseheads host the Gatineau Olympiques on Thursday.
