Mooseheads still waiting on Frk

Martin Frk’s agent hopes the “at times arduous” process of getting Martin Frk into a Halifax Mooseheads jersey will be resolved in the “very near future.”

Frk, who the Mooseheads selected third overall in last month’s Canadian Hockey League import draft, and Octagon Hockey representative Allan Walsh are still working on cutting through red tape to allow the skilled left-winger to play in the QMJHL.

“The process of bringing an elite European player to the CHL can at times be arduous,” Walsh told Metro in an e-mail. “The process involves the player, the club that drafted the player, Hockey Canada, the IIHF and the relevant European federation.”

If Frk doesn’t end up wearing a Mooseheads jersey in September, it would be a major disappointment for the rebuilding club. No QMJHL team has scored fewer goals than the Mooseheads the past two seasons.

The Mooseheads’ scouts compare Frk’s style to that of Cam Neely, while various scouting services consider him an early first-round candidate for the 2012 NHL draft.

The 17-year-old was one of the top scorers in the Czech under-20 league last season, piling up 28 goals and 27 assists for 56 points along with 184 penalty minutes in 39 games.

“We are all working on the process now and hope to have some resolution to this situation in the very near future to everyone’s satisfaction,” Walsh said.

Walsh did not respond to a direct question requesting details about Frk’s contract with his Czech club, Karlovy Vary.
