More charges for former foster parent

Police have laid more charges against a former Calgary foster parent in connection with sex offences against a boy under the age of 18.

Garry Prokopishin, 51, was arrested and charged Tuesday and has since been released from custody.

The investigation began in June 2009 and charges were laid in February in relation to three alleged victims.

Prokopishin allegedly offered money in exchange for sexual acts from those who were under his care. Since the initial charges, police have interviewed others under Prokopishin’s care and had enough to lay new charges.

“There potentially could be other victims,” said Staff Sgt. Leah Barber of the CPS child abuse unit.

Barber said since many of the children under Prokopishin’s care would now be adults, those who may be victims may be reluctant to come forward.

Prokopishin has been charged with one count of obtaining or attempting to obtain sex from a person under 18 and one count of inciting sexual contact with a youth by a person in authority.

Police encourage anyone with any information to come forward.
