More snowshoers saved

Four more snowshoers were rescued on Mt. Seymour yesterday, just one day after a man fell 400 metres to his death while snowshoeing on Goat Mountain, North Shore Rescue said.

“It was the same situation as the day before,” said Tim Jones of North Shore Rescue. “These people had no business being there, unprepared for the conditions.”

A member of the North Shore Rescue team happened to be on Seymour and noticed a man and woman had fallen just around the mountain’s first peak. The couple had been hiking in the backcountry, off the open trails, when the woman lost her balance.

She suffered a broken arm, her companion an injured knee. Both hikers were equipped with only snowshoes. They were treated in hospital for their injuries.

Shortly after the rescue of that couple, team members came across two other men with bloody faces who had fallen elsewhere on the mountain. There is no word yet on the extent of their injuries.

“The message must get out there,” said Jones. “You must be prepared for the conditions of these trails. Full crampons and ice axes are a necessity.”
