Toronto Stock Exchange (11,424.61 down 21.34 points):

Verenex Energy Inc. (TSX:VNX). Oil and gas. Down six cents or 0.91 per cent to $6.54 on volume of 10,775,564 shares. The company announced a deal Friday under which the Libyan Investment Authority will pay $7.09 per share in cash for the firm.

Peregrine Diamonds Ltd. (TSX:PGD). Miner. Up 86 cents or 107.87 per cent at $1.85 on volume of 8,156,111 shares. The company announced the discovery of large diamonds and a coarse diamond size distribution in representative drill core samples collected at its Chidliak project on Baffin Island.

Shore Gold Inc. (TSX:SGF) Miner. Down 23 cents or 15.65 per cent to $1.24 on volume of 7,200,612 shares.

Mercator Minerals Ltd. (TSX:ML). Miner. Up 16 cents or 5.73 per cent to $2.96 on volume of 6,977,300 shares. Last week, the developmental stage miner announced it had closed a bought-deal financing with underwriters to raise $80.5 million.

Bombardier Inc. (TSX:BBD.B). Transportation. Up one cents or 0.21 per cent at $4.67 on 6,534,224 shares.

TSX Venture Exchange ( 1,265 down 16.80 points):

Canasia Industries Corp. (TSXV:CAJ). Minerals. Up 13 cents or 53.06 per cent at 38 cents on volume of 16,005,823 shares.

Nanika Resources Inc. (TSXV:NKA). Vancouver-based mineral exploration company active in Canada and China, up seven cents or 118.18 per cent to 12 cents on volume of 7,782,733 shares.

Mexivada Mining Corp. (TSXV: MNV). Miner. Up 11 cents or 110 per cent to 21 cents on volume of 3,688,589 shares. The Vancouver-based exploration-stage company reported a promising development at its Goldstorm property in Nevada.

Companies reporting major news:

Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan (TSX:POT). Fertilizer. Down $1.66 or 1.63 per cent to $100.21 on volume of 1,277,842 shares after the company announced Friday it was lowering its 2009 earnings target.

Consumers' Waterheater Income Fund (TSX:CWI.UN). Income trust. Down eight cents or 1.61 per cent at 4.88 on volume of 1,161,836 shares. The company cut its monthly distributions to unitholders by half to 5.4 cents per unit, or 64.8 cents on an annualized basis, effective with the payout scheduled for Oct. 30.

TransAlta Corp. (TSX:TA). Utility. Unchanged at $21.51 on volume of 488,267 shares. Earlier the stock had been up 17 cents after TransAlta said it was extending its hostile bid for Canadian Hydro Developers Inc. (TSX:KHD) to Oct. 2. Canadian Hydro shares edged up five cents to $5.08 on volume of 587,138 shares.
