Motorcyclist seriously injured after high-speed escape from police ends in crash

A man is in hospital with serious injuries after he crashed his motorcycle late Wednesday night trying to elude police, investigators said.

Police said the man was seen speeding southbound on Macleod Trail near 36 Ave. SE while allegedly racing a Ford GT sports car just after 11 p.m. When police pulled both vehicles over and approached on foot, the bike rider raced off.

Police said in a release they did not attempt to pursue the bike, but when the motorcycle tried to slow down at Glenmore Trail, the driver lost support of the bike and hit a girder supporting a sign, according to police. “The impact was so severe that it sheared off the sign,” police said. The man is being treated in hospital for his injuries and police are investigating.
