Mount Royal takes on ‘freshman 15’ with healthy food

Mount Royal College is looking to eliminate the “freshman 15,” a legendary 15 pound weight gain for college students.

Students gaining weight isn’t just legend – often, they don’t have the time or money to make healthy food choices. To combat this, yesterday the Peer Health Educators program provided a free lunch to students, which included a chicken fajita and bottled water.

“It’s mostly about convenience for students,” said Charmene Brewer, health education coordinator of the Peer Health Educators. “If they buy carrots, they have to cut them up to put them in their lunch. But if they buy chips or cookies, they just have to put them in a plastic bag and that’s it.”

Chefs from Sodexo demonstrated how to cook the fajitas, showing how students can make quick, healthy meals at home.

“I try to eat well, but finding time to eat is a tough thing,” said student Chase Ditosto.
