Mounties are trained to use lethal force if their lives are threatened, an RCMP training expert testified yesterday at a coroner’s inquest into the death of Ian Bush.
Cpl. Chris Knight was not speaking directly about Bush, who was shot in Houston, B.C., while in police custody, but about RCMP training in general, CBC News Online reports. Knight acknowledged that it is up to the court to decide whether an officer had the right to shoot a suspect.

Bush was shot in 2005 by Const. Paul Koester after being arrested for drinking beer outside a hockey game and giving a false name. Koester has testified that Bush attacked him when they were alone in the detachment, and he shot in self-defence.
