Congratulations Halifax - you’ve had an amazing week where you continued to move forward with breaking down barriers and improving the way we live, work and play.

In case you missed it this week, Natasha Prest was sworn in as the first female African Nova Scotian firefighter in the Halifax Regional Municipality.

As well, the Halifax Pride Festival celebrated its 22nd edition, and for the first time, under hallmark status from HRM. This means the festival was formally recognized for its impact on the community’s culture and economy, opening a door for funding opportunities to make the festival bigger and better.

In a very active July, these two celebrations were just the tip of the success iceberg. They have helped fuel the momentum felt downtown.

In these past few weeks, Halifax has begun to really feel alive. The downtown is bustling with new energy and new ideas. Halifax, you should be proud of these recent accomplishments -- and Haligonians, you should be also be proud of yourselves.

The energy can be felt in the conversations overheard in coffee shops and bars, while waiting for the bus, or to get into a concert. It can best be described as passionate individuals sharing their thoughts and dreams.

If you’ve been part of these conversations, harness your energy, breathe life into your ideas and let them take shape. If you haven’t, it’s not too late to tap into this energy and challenge yourself.

No journey is ever easy (or short), but everyday Nova Scotians use their energy to fuel their passions and make change. Most of us won’t receive an award or formal recognition for our journeys. We do it because of a passion and desire to challenge ourselves, and others beyond the status quo. Our journey will change the way we do business, the way we develop our community, and how we interact with others.

This week, I challenge everyone to celebrate a success you’ve had and one of someone else. The success can be big or small, size doesn’t matter, but the celebration must be meaningful.
With every success we celebrate, we are energized to move forward. This energy builds within us and inspires those around us. Movement starts with one person, while momentum carries to many.

Anyone can drive change, and help make Halifax a better place to live, work and play, and it all starts with celebrating our successes, following our passions and sharing our energy.
