Science-fiction in setting and indie drama in content, Another Earth opens with the appearance of a second earth populated with duplicates of everyone on our own planet, but quickly ignores that grand conceit in favour of a small, ambiguous story about a damaged girl who secretly befriends the man whose wife and child she accidentally killed years earlier. It’s a challenging and thought-provoking movie sure to irritate anyone seeking concrete answers to the filmmakers’ questions.
