Beats, Rhymes and Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest

Genre:
Documentary

Director: Michael Rapaport

Stars: Q-Tip, Phife Dawg and Ali Shaheed Muhammad

Rating: **1/2

Michael Rapaport’s documentary about the influential (and now semi-defunct) New York City rap crew A Tribe Called Quest is a useful primer for non-hip-hop heads about the group’s influence: interviews describing their formation and early success are candid and revealing. But as it moves into the present tense, it feels more like a VH1 Reuniting the Band special than an investigative document.
