Bellflower takes the DIY indie dramedy and incinerates it, trading quirk for carnage and in some respects, even pushes its narrative into horror film territory. Director Evan Glodell casts himself as an oddball outsider obsessed with the film Mad Max 2. Along with his equally fixated pal, the two build flamethrowers, weapons and an armoured car, lost in their daydreams of a divine apocalypse. That is until a girl — of course — enters the picture and throws off their cheerfully deranged existence. Bellflower is certainly unique but there isn’t a likeable character in the mix. It’s an interesting film, but a hard one to like.
