Ralph Fiennes’ ferocious adaptation of one of Shakespeare’s least-known plays has been calibrated for present-tense relevance: the director casts himself as the resentful, battle-scarred general of a war-torn nation battling media spin and the machinations of duplicitous politicians. Expert support from Jessica Chastain, Vanessa Redgrave and, surprisingly, Gerard Butler -— as Fiennes’ equally combat-savvy nemesis -— gives the film dramatic heft to balance its scattered action flick moves.
