The cowboys spend so much of the film sitting around talking and whining that you find yourself rooting for the aliens — and wishing they’d show up sooner.

The real shame, though, is the wasted pedigree at every level, from a skilled genre director (Favreau) to blockbuster godfathers as producers (Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard) to a dream cast (Harrison Ford, Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde and Sam Rockwell).

That so many great elements can add up to so little makes you wonder where it all went so terribly, terribly wrong.
