This mildly unconventional, at times overly precious biopic about the late French singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg benefits from a fine lead performance: Eric Elmosnino is a dead-ringer for his character.
The usual artist-career cliches are avoided, but the surreal touches left in their place feel more like a filmmaker imposing his style on a subject than a true illumination of Gainsbourg’s brilliance.
