Griff The Invisible is an Australian indie twist on the DIY superhero movie like Kick Ass. What makes the film unique is that there’s no suggestion that Griff ever has a chance of becoming a hero. Despite his costumed antics, the character is clearly delusional and the film works best when focused more on the bizarre love story between Griff and an equally unbalanced young woman than the crime fighting theatrics. Though the delusional would-be super hero has been done before, writer/director Leon Ford’s interest lies more in his character’s unhinged mental state and the sad reality that implies. That shift in focus makes for a far more resonant and emotionally complex movie than the gentle comedy appears to be at first glance.
