If its pretentious, posturing and pointless cruelty ye be seeking, look no further than French director Xavier Gens obnoxious slog, The Divide. Ostensibly a post-apocalypse drama, the film begins promisingly, as nuclear missiles decimate Manhattan and trap a ragtag band of “types” in a filthy apartment basement, the lair of half mad building handyman Mickey (Michael Biehn). Almost immediately these badly written characters are at each other’s clichéd throats and quickly devolve into a pack of degenerates. And that’s The Divide’s most unforgivable crime: there’s no pacing, no sense of passing time and no real logic for these people to behave like the dregs they do. Rape, bad bathroom habits, and a despicable scene where the great Rosanna Arquette is ridiculed for having her period are all part of the boring blend. This is ugly, stupid and ridiculously long junk.
