The Help takes place against the backdrop of a time in the South when groups like the White Citizen’s Council had a storefront on Main Street.
The story of a plucky young writer (Emma Stone) and two courageous African-American maids (Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer) who write a book exposing the real lives of the domestic help is a finely acted but somewhat sanitized look at Mississippi life in 1963.
Long on emotion and sincerity, to be truly effective this could have used a little more grit, but it does tell an important story.
