We Were Here chronicles the rise of AIDS in San Francisco’s Castro district, giving historical perspective to what was once thought of as a “gay cancer.” Told through first-hand accounts from the people that lived through the epidemic’s early years, their stories of losing not just friends, but entire social circles, is heart-wrenching.
