Movie watching, al Fresco

An in-love underachiever played by John Cusack, a sexed-up Marilyn Monroe and a deformed dude named Chunk are among the images being projected on the Electropolis this summer.

The Atlantic Film Festival announced the thrills, chills and spills-filled line-up of this year’s alFresco filmFesto yesterday — a roster that ranges from Some Like It Hot to Moulin Rouge. “It really was fun to program,” said Lia Rinaldo, director of the festival. “I think it is our strongest program and our most eclectic for sure. It is all over the place.”

Also being screened are Stand By Me on Aug. 8, and a family night featuring The Goonies on Aug. 15. Moulin Rouge — starring Nicole Kidman — will be screened in Dolby digital on Aug. 22.

“We are always trying to cover every base by finding a family feature or an old classic. We really want to target everyone that we can,” said Rinaldo. This year’s people’s choice online vote will be for a cult classic film sponsored by Clean Nova Scotia and with a think-green theme. They include The Toxic Avenger, Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster, Soylent Green, Empire Of the Ants, and Creature From The Black Lagoon.

Screenings take place at Tall Ships Quay in front of the Electropolis at 9 p.m. Doors open at 8 p.m., and admission is a $5 donation. To vote on the people’s choice film, or for more information, visit www.atlanticfilm.com.
