Murder arrest provokes calls for changes to bail system

A Calgary criminologist supports changing bail provisions after news a man facing three counts of first-degree murder in a triple homicide New Year’s Day was arrested and charged in an incident 10 days earlier.

Mount Royal College criminologist Roland LaHaye said cases like this, while rare, reinforce the need to change bail provisions.

“Right now the onus is on the authorities to show why a person may be a danger to society, but I would support changing that to put the onus on the offenders,” LaHaye said, adding the Conservative government is eyeing changes to current legislation.

LaHaye said the provisions could help prevent future cases where innocent bystanders get killed; such was the case when Keni Su’a was gunned down Jan. 1 at Bolsa Vietnamese Restaurant.

Real Christian Honorio, 25, charged Tuesday with three counts of first-degree murder in the New Year’s Day murders, was one of five people arrested and charged with more than 100 offences after a gang-related bust in the community of Heritage Pointe on Dec. 22, 2008. Police seized drugs, weapons and homemade bombs inside the home.
