They got by with a little help from their friends.

High River’s historic Museum of the?Highwood went up in flames early yesterday morning, but town mayor Les Rempel said the damage and losses could have been a lot worse without the help from the Calgary Glenbow museum, surrounding towns and firefighters.

“We’re quite fortunate we were able to salvage some of the pieces that were in the museum.

We’re very grateful because there are very valuable artifacts in there,” he said.

“It was really nice to use Glenbow’s expertise and have their knowledge when trying to recover the artifacts.

“We’re also lucky we had a lot of artifacts in storage offsite.”

Calgary Glenbow Museum spokesperson Megan Bailey confirmed a team was sent out to help High River salvage important pieces of art.

“They are going to continue to offer their help and expertise by sending a larger team out today to help,” she said.

Fire personnel continue to investigate the cause of the fire and the amount of damage.
