Music fest calls out for security staff

B.C.’s largest security company needs staff to handle crowds of more than 40,000 at the biggest event of the summer.

Genesis Security is looking to hire up to 300 security personnel for the Pemberton Music Festival, an event that features the likes of Coldplay and Jay-Z, from July 25-27.

For Ashley Meehan, Genesis director of advanced services, candidates with strong physical abilities are important, but other traits are just as equally important.

“We want someone who has a good head on their shoulders … someone who can be calm in situations,” he said.

Meehan still needs new people to work the stage front, gates and the many campsites at the festival, including many women.

New recruits will first have to complete Genesis’ training academy to become certified security officers. The program includes a minimum of 64 hours of classroom courses and practical training that takes about two weeks to complete.

Meehan said there is still plenty of time for people to get trained and gain valuable experience before Pemberton.
“We’ve got a lot of events between now and then,” he said. “If they’re new they work with us for a while (and) we put them on events that some of our better trained supervisors will be…”

Meehan added that working for Genesis Security can be a great way for people wanting to begin a career in law enforcement.

“Anyone that wants to get into that field it is actually a good stepping stone for them to get some actual experience.”
