Music’s stars will align on Sunday

When Danny Fernandes rolls into the MuchMusic Video Awards on Sunday, he’ll make a red carpet entrance he says has never been seen before.

“I can’t tell you what it is, but (fans) can expect something crazy,” says Fernandes.

The young Toronto R&B artist is tied with Vancouver-based rockers Nickelback for the most MMVA nominations, with five nods under his belt.

It’s a dream come true for the 23-year-old who says he’s aspired to attend the annual awards show since he was a kid.

And he’s not the first in his family to receive MMVA endorsement.

In 2003, his older brother Shawn Desman won the award for Pop Video of the Year, which Fernandes is up for this year.

But even though Fernandes received one more nomination than Desman did six years ago, he says it’s all love between the siblings.

“Maybe he’s a little mad, but the little brother always wins anyways,” he says with a laugh.

Fernandes won’t take the stage to perform on Sunday, but he’ll be entertained by such stars as Nickelback, Kelly Clarkson, Alexisonfire, Black Eyed Peas, Classified and show co-hosts the Jonas Brothers, who are all among the performers slated to appear.

Avant-garde New York siren Lady Gaga, up for two awards, will also bring her brand of electro-pop to the MMVA stage.

But she says fans can’t anticipate how her performance will take shape, and that they’ll just have to wait and see.

“I just have to consider the esthetic,” she says.

“There’s a lot of factors — is it light or dark out, how big is the stage, the positioning of the audience — you have to take a lot of things into account, but that’s why we’re planning very far in advance.”

Whatever Gaga has planned, however, will be homage to her Canadian fans, who she lauds for helping launch her to fame.

“My whole career started in Canada,” she says. “I’m looking forward to doing a really big performance to thank all my fans for all their devotion.”

But it won’t be easy. Used to playing full-length shows, Gaga says she’ll have to edit down her regular performance style to conform to her MMVA slot.

“I have to pack in the emotional journey of an entire show into three and a half minutes.

“It’s the same ball, on acid.”
