HALIFAX - Nova Scotia's premier says he plans to announce a date for two provincial byelections within the week - barring a federal election call.

Darrell Dexter says Antigonish and Inverness could have new members of the legislature before the fall sitting ends.

Dexter says the reason he'd hold off, in the event of a federal call, is to avoid voter confusion with two separate campaigns.

The provincial seats were vacated by former Conservative premier Rodney MacDonald and former deputy premier Angus MacIsaac.

The legislature will be back in session Sept. 17.
