N.S. rescuers get federal cash

Defence Minister Peter MacKay took some time out from the Halifax International Security Forum to make a funding announcement yesterday.

In a statement, he pledged $1.3 million for provincewide standardized communications for Nova Scotia’s Ground Search and Rescue Association.

Volunteer rescuers currently use a patchwork of radios, which presents compatibility problems.

“When someone is lost or in distress, they need help fast,” said MacKay in the release. “Having search and rescue responders communicate more effectively greatly enhances the efficiency of rescue operations and saves lives.”
