NAIT gives shelter gift that keeps on grilling

A light snow fell softly as a steaming barbecue provided by NAIT students grilled lunch for hundreds of inner-city Edmontonians yesterday.

The barbecue was hand-crafted by NAIT sheet metal students and donated by the school to Boyle Street Community Services. The pair jointly hosted a barbecue to celebrate the handoff.

“It’s the first time we’ve ever donated something like this,” said Les Carr, associate chair of the sheet metal program at NAIT. “We build a couple of them every year.”

It all started last year around Canada Day when Boyle requested to borrow one of the large barbecues crafted by NAIT. This year, NAIT asked suppliers to contribute more than $3,000 of materials so they could donate the barbecue to the centre.

“This donation is a unique donation without a doubt, and a very generous one as well,” said David Berger, deputy director at Boyle Street Community Services. “It expands our ability to offer more community-oriented programs.”

Students volunteered to man the barbecue at the event.

“I wanted to see it actually lit up and working,” said Sterrin Kereliuk, one of three NAIT sheet metal students who built the barbecue.

“When you put so much work into it, it’s nice to see where it’s going.”
