This sci-fi themed comedy doesn’t just visit Planet Quirk, it crash lands upon it. The fine sense of the absurd that enlivened Jared Hess’ previous films, Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, is in scant supply here.
A wannabe author with great ambition but no discernible talent, Benjamin (Michael Angarano) pens an elaborate space oater called Yeast Lords, featuring a hero named Bronco (a very game Sam Rockwell) who loses his testicles to kinky aliens.
In real life, only a psychiatrist might be interested in Yeast Lords. Yet the achingly quirky Gentlemen Broncos has two sets of idiots fighting for the property: pompous and plagiarizing sci-fi hack Dr. Ronald Chevalier (Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords); and Benjamin’s erstwhile pals Tabatha (Halley Feiffer) and Lonnie (Nacho Libre’s Hector Jimenez).
