Nash’s celeb soccer match in the works

Steve Nash’s popular celebrity soccer match that has been held in New York City for the past two years is coming to Vancouver this fall.

Nash’s Showdown in Downtown is a free eight-aside charity soccer game that will be held Sept. 19 in Yaletown’s David Lam Park.

A similar event, Nash’s Showdown in Chinatown in New York City, has attracted the likes of soccer great Thierry Henry (Barcelona) and a number of NBA stars, including Toronto Raptor Chris Bosh.

Event details and participants will be announced at the end of next week.

Tonight, Vancouver’s park board is voting on whether to grant permission for a 250-person beer garden at the site.

Randy Clegg, marketing director for the Vancouver event, said the match will pay for itself through sponsorships and will raise funds for Nash’s foundation through donations and a celebrity after-party.
