Yolanda Joseph, 12, holds her baby brother, Nathaniel, yesterday at Scarborough General Hospital as mom Abiola Wilson and her husband Neil look on proudly.

Just seconds after midnight, when cheers of "Happy New Year!" still rang in the city, Nathaniel Anthony Wilson burst in with a wail.

"He was so loud," said Abiola Wilson, who gave birth to the healthy infant at Scarborough General Hospital four seconds into the new year, making Nathaniel the GTA’s first baby of 2008.

There are no official criteria, beyond medical records and good faith, to determine which baby crossed the finish line first. But hospital staff agreed: four seconds is a tough time to beat.

Meanwhile, at Sunnybrook hospital, first-time parents Jared and Dana Florence started the year with a big surprise: Two boys and one girl, each weighing less than two pounds. The triplets were born around 12:30 a.m., three months prematurely.
