NDP’s Epstein off the hook

NDP MLA Howard Epstein will not be punished for revealing confidential information about the trade centre proposal to the media.

Epstein apologized to his colleagues yesterday for breaching caucus confidentiality. He drew the ire of some MLAs by telling a reporter from The Coast that the province is being asked for a $57-million contribution to Rank Inc.’s proposed Argyle Street project.

While Epstein says the slip was inadvertent, he doesn't regret the fact the public knows the figure.

“The numbers should have been out there, but I regret that I was the one who put them out there,” he said.

“I think the minister should have put them out there, and I know they would have come out sooner or later.”

Premier Darrell Dexter said the caucus was satisfied with Epstein's apology.

“He expressed his deep sorrow about the release of that information.”

“Caucus weighed very carefully what (Epstein) had to say,” he continued.
