Nearby park included in Lansdowne designs

There will be changes to Sylvia Holden Park when the plans are put forward by the five design teams for the public space at Lansdowne Park next Thursday.

However, the councillor representing the ward where the community park is located believes it should never have been included in the design competition in the first place.

“It’s very difficult to imagine how you can combine a massive mall and hotel complex with a community park,” said Capital Ward Coun. Clive Doucet.

Sylvia Holden Park borders the north edge of Lansdowne Park.

According to Alta Vista Coun. Peter Hume, the wading pool and other assets in the park must be retained and remain under control of the city’s parks department. Facilities can be relocated, but the new ones must be built before the old ones are removed.

Yesterday, Doucet put forward a motion to ensure Sylvia Holden Park would not be altered by any developments in Lansdowne Park, but that motion was delayed until May 26 so council can look at the proposals from the design firms in the competition.
