Need for more recycling: Druh Farrell

Calgary’s recycling could be taken to the next step as one alderman is looking to get a jump on expanding the program.

Ald. Druh Farrell will be presenting a notice of motion to her council colleagues today asking administration to explore more recycling opportunities.

“Council has a goal of diverting 80 per cent of its waste by 2020 and it’s asking for a report on what the next steps should be to get us to that goal,” she said.

Farrell said at the top of the list would be organic waste recycling and creating opportunities for residential recycling in apartments and condos.

“I think we’re going to have to take several steps at once in moving toward that goal. It’s an aggressive goal, it’s a good goal and it means we have to be continuously improving,” said Farrell.

Apartment dweller Amy Hipkin said having recycling in her building would be much more convenient.

“I probably would recycle even more,” she said. “But if I knew that I didn’t have to transport it somewhere and I could just take it out, it would be a lot easier for sure.”
