Net-Zero energy home goes on display

Calgary’s first Net-Zero home, Avalon Master Builder’s Discovery 4 House, is now open for public viewing at SAIT Polytechnic.

The Net-Zero house is the latest in green innovation: It generates as much or more energy than it consumes over an annual period through heating, hot water, and power for appliances and lights.

“The Discovery 4 House was built on SAIT’s campus to research, test and demonstrate the latest in environmentally efficient building technologies,” said Irene Lewis, SAIT president and CEO.

“With thanks to government and industry partners, SAIT’s Applied Research and Innovation Services team helped to make Calgary’s first Net-Zero home a reality.”

Environment Minister Jim Prentice presented SAIT with $2.24 million from the College and Community Innovation Program for the Discovery 4 House.

The federal funding will be used for SAIT’s Green Building Technologies program to support its goal of developing a Net-Zero energy standard and certification for Western Canada.

“Hopefully with the applied technology and investments, we’ll start to see some of the new homes being built with these technologies,” said Prentice.

The Discovery 4 House will be on display at SAIT until June.
