British Columbia will likely run out of phone numbers by August 2016, prompting the introduction of a fourth area code to the province.

Shawn Hall of Telus attributes the shortage to technological innovations like cellphones, iPhones and BlackBerrys.

“Two decades ago, it was common for people to have one or two numbers, a home number and a business number perhaps. Now, people often have half a dozen or more phone numbers,” added Hall.

The new area code would be the third added since 1996, and would join 604, 250 and 778.
