New Brunswick politician apologizes for suggesting girls should 'make more babies' on his Facebook page

A Tory member of the New Brunswick legislature has apologized for saying women should make more babies on his Facebook page.

A Tory member of the New Brunswick legislature has apologized for saying women should make more babies on his Facebook page.

In
responding to the provincial budget Tuesday, Carl Urquhart posted on
Facebook: “Girls we need more babies or we will never be able to
support our future.”

Liberal member Joan MacAlpine-Stiles told the legislature today that she was offended by the comment.

She
says it's demeaning to suggest to New Brunswick's young women that
their only role in society and contribution to the provincial economy
is to have babies.

After prompting by MacAlpine-Stiles, Premier
Shawn Graham and government house leader Mike Murphy, Urquhart rose in
the legislature and apologized to anyone who was offended by his
comment.

Urquhart was elected to the provincial legislature in 2006.
