‘New elegance’ style evokes mature tones

Where practicality meets showpiece, you’ll find the Southwind model home.

It’s one of several home designs within Traditions, a Heathwood community located in Milton, Ont., on Main Street at the Niagara Escarpment.

“It’s very livable, but at the same time, shows very well,” said Sean Swayze, designer with Bryon Patton and Associates, the firm that designed the Southwind model.

The balance is best evoked in the open-concept main-floor living room, which Swayze deems as comfortable and entertaining. “It’s a living room you’d actually use. It’s not a shrine-type living room that nobody even goes into. This is really somewhere the family would go to watch TV and it’s also formal enough that, when you have guests over, you can entertain there.”

To fuse functions, Swayze said they chose to fashion the model in a style he calls “new elegance.”

“We really wanted it to have a rich, comfortable feel,” he said. “It’s kind of like the new modern, which has traditional elements to it. We used deep coppers, golds, reds and khakis as our accents to give that very luxurious feel to the house.”

Swayze said the new modern look winds through the kitchen in the large traditional wood table, matched with the addition of contemporary chairs. “We wanted a Barbara Barry-looking type of furniture — clean, tuxedo-style sofas, rich leather club chairs and lots of colour in the area rugs, but not traditional. They’re more on the contemporary side,” he said. “We mixed traditional with contemporary to really give it a more mature feel.
