A new folk festival featuring Willie Nile, Michael Weston King and Ron Hawkin will kick off Sunday at the Carleton Music Bar and Grill.

The first annual Halifax Urban Folk Festival is the brainchild of the bar’s owner, Mike Campbell.

He started the festival “as a way to transfer the spirit of renowned folk festivals such as Mariposa ... into an urban setting,” a release said.

“I thought it would be cool to put together a festival that celebrated Nova Scotia’s most significant cultural export — singer-songwriters,” Campbell added.

The festival officially launches over the Labour Day weekend of 2011, but this year offers a preview of things to come, the release said.
