A 26-year-old New Glasgow man has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder.

John David DeWolfe was charged in the stabbing death of Bruce Philip Smith of New Glasgow, who died in his Washington Street apartment in June 2008.

DeWolfe was scheduled for a judge and jury trail in Supreme Court this September but the accused changed his plea to guilty and a joint recommendation of life in prison with no chance of parole for 16 years was reached between the defence and crown late last month.

A sentencing report describes the murder as gruesome with the victim being stabbed numerous times after he died.

The accused has been in custody since the 2008 murder.

A second man, Trevor Daniel Broderick, 22, pleaded guilty to a second-degree murder charge in April 2009 in connection with the murder.
