New health superboard could mean the end of trans fat ban

More than a year ago, Calgary became the first Canadian city to implement a ban on the use of trans fats in restaurants.

But now that has changed. With the the new provincial health superboard coming in April, old municipal rules no longer apply.

“The Calgary Health Region has started doing inspections, but I believe they’ve put them on hold.” said Alberta Health and Wellness spokesperson Howard May, without giving any firm details as to when or how the ban could be reinstated.

Chicken on the Way says it has not used trans-fats in its recipes for years and plans to keep it that way, but making the switch was not cheap.

“We found something and it started at a certain price, and then over the last two years it’s almost doubled in price,” said manager Myrna Derowyn. She added some less established businesses squeezed for cash in an economic downturn may go back to using trans fats, which are thought to reduce good cholesterol and increase the risk of heart disease.
